Kiwi is a native fruit of China. Kiwi is a variety of climbing vines and is highly respected as the national fruit of this country. This fruit was exported to New Zealand at the beginning of the 20th century and later cultivated there, and its name is derived from the kiwi bird that is native to New Zealand. Kiwi is an egg-shaped fruit with a brown color and a fluffy texture and pale green flesh. In 1347, the first kiwi seedling was planted in Ramsar city. Currently, this fruit is cultivated in the three provinces of Gilan, Mazandaran, and Golestan, and on the edge of the Caspian Sea, and its cultivation area increases every year. Today, Iranian export kiwi is considered one of the economic export products. After China, Italy and New Zealand, Iran is the fourth producer of kiwi in the world.

Kiwi botany

The scientific name of kiwi is Actinidia deliciosa from the Actinidiaceae family. Kiwi is a two-stemmed tree with relatively thick roots, juicy and superficial flesh (you should avoid deep plowing around the trunk), deciduous and heart-shaped leaves, and flowers bloom in late spring. The fruit can be harvested from the beginning of November and the average weight of the fruit in Iran is 70 grams. This fruit contains a variety of vitamins A, B, C, E, as well as substances such as tannin, zinc, phosphorus, sodium, potassium, fiber compounds, etc. Every 100 grams of it has 300 milligrams of vitamin C, which is almost 2 times the amount found in vegetables.

Kiwi export production status of Iran

This fruit has been noticed in Iran since 1347, and after conducting preliminary research by the Ramsar Agricultural Research Station, it was approved as a replacement for the fruits due to its greater resistance to cold compared to the fruits in the north of Iran, and after the arrival of selected and suitable cultivars. From the countries of Italy and France, the names Hayward, Bruno, Abbott, Manti, and the male Tomori and Matva varieties were practically noticed commercially in 1363. Currently, this fruit is grown in Mazandaran, Golestan and Gilan provinces on the edge of the Caspian Sea and in suitable lands, and its area is increased every year.

The most important export markets of this product are Russia, Iraq, India, United Arab Emirates and Afghanistan, respectively.
