Eggplant varieties
The exported eggplant product has different types. Except for its ornamental varieties, at least 3 types of eggplant are widely cultivated in Iran. This type of eggplants are elongated, narrow or round and are purple, yellow, black and white. This product grows in all tropical and subtropical regions.
Eggplant belongs to the potato family, it has been cultivated in India since ancient times and from there it reached other parts of the world. China started cultivating it from the 9th century. English traders brought this plant from Guinea to England in the 17th century and called it Guinea gourd.
Eggplants are available all year round and in America, the states of Florida, Texas, Louisiana and New Jersey grow most of the American eggplants.
Eggplant types include different varieties, such as yellow, white, purple, etc. Eggplant is an edible product that is mostly used for cooking and has many medicinal and therapeutic properties.
In general, it can be said that there are two general types of eggplant, pen eggplant and scalloped eggplant. But they can be examined in separate divisions as follows.
Black eggplant
Black eggplant has been used for a long time. There are two types of black eggplants: pen and diced. Black eggplant is mostly used for cooking and preparing food. The black eggplant has a thin and long fruit, so that its length is several times its diameter.
It is interesting to note that in Iran, Fars province is the only province that produces eggplants in all seasons of the year. In the agricultural year of 1993-1994, more than 3,240 hectares of eggplants were planted in Fars province, and it is expected that more than 125,000 tons of eggplants will be harvested from this area.
Eggplant export
Iranian eggplants are suitable for export to the vegetable market of countries such as Russia, Qatar, UAE (Dubai), Kuwait, Oman, Iraq, etc. Pomir Trading Company buys eggplant products from farmers all over Iran and supplies them to countries that volunteer to buy this product.
According to the statistics of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), in 2013, about 50 million tons of eggplants were produced in the world, and China was in first place with the production of about 29 million tons of eggplants. With the production of about 14 million tons of eggplant, India is the second most important producer of this product, and Iran has taken the third place in the world production of eggplant with the production of about 1.5 million tons of eggplant.
